Background of the Study
Climate change is increasingly recognized as a driver of conflict, particularly in regions dependent on natural resources for survival and livelihood. In Nigeria, many conflicts are rooted in competition for resources, particularly in the arid north, where climate change is exacerbating resource scarcity. Marte LGA in Borno State is one such region that is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, particularly through desertification, reduced rainfall, and the shrinking of arable land. These environmental changes have directly impacted agricultural productivity and water access, leading to fierce competition among communities and even violent conflicts over resources.

The impacts of climate change on resource-based conflicts are especially evident in areas where pastoralist and agriculturalist communities coexist. Climate-induced changes in rainfall patterns have affected the movement and grazing areas of herders, leading to frequent clashes with farmers. In addition to traditional resource-based conflicts, the added stress of climate change exacerbates existing tensions and contributes to broader social instability. This study seeks to investigate how climate change is influencing resource-based conflicts in Marte LGA and how local communities are coping with the resultant pressures on their livelihoods.

Statement of the Problem
Marte LGA has witnessed increasing tensions and conflicts in recent years, largely driven by competition over dwindling natural resources. Climate change has exacerbated these resource shortages, further intensifying conflicts between farming and pastoralist communities. Despite the clear links between environmental degradation and conflict, there is insufficient research on how climate change specifically influences resource-based conflicts in Marte LGA. This study will investigate the effects of climate change on these conflicts and offer policy recommendations for mitigating climate-induced resource-based violence.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the impact of climate change on resource-based conflicts in Marte LGA.

  2. To assess the coping mechanisms of local communities in the face of climate-induced resource scarcity.

  3. To recommend policies for mitigating climate-induced resource conflicts in Marte LGA.

Research Questions

  1. How does climate change affect the availability of resources in Marte LGA, and how does this contribute to conflict?

  2. What are the main drivers of resource-based conflicts in Marte LGA, and how are they linked to climate change?

  3. What strategies can be employed to reduce climate-induced resource conflicts in Marte LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Climate change significantly contributes to the escalation of resource-based conflicts in Marte LGA.

  2. Communities in Marte LGA are increasingly resorting to violent methods to resolve conflicts related to climate-induced resource scarcity.

  3. Effective resource management and climate adaptation strategies can reduce the frequency and intensity of resource-based conflicts in Marte LGA.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Marte LGA, Borno State, examining the effects of climate change from 2000 to the present. Limitations include the challenge of isolating climate change impacts from other socio-economic and political factors contributing to the conflicts, as well as potential difficulties in obtaining precise data on climate-induced resource shortages.

Definitions of Terms

  • Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and other atmospheric conditions that affect ecosystems and human systems.

  • Resource-based Conflicts: Conflicts that arise from competition over access to natural resources, such as water, land, and grazing areas.

  • Desertification: The process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture.
